Hello,
I received a quote from the plumbing company carrying out the work, and I was almost shocked. I understand that plumbing installations are expensive. However, I find the installation of a rain shower (surface-mounted, with thermostat) for about 1000 € gross quite overpriced (especially since you can find similar products online for around 100-300 € without installation, which shouldn’t be that expensive, especially considering the user manual is available online).
The installation of a faucet we chose is supposed to cost over 300 €.
Is this justified, and does it really result in significantly better quality (I am not an expert), or is this simply taking advantage of the contract situation (take it or leave it)? We are not obliged and could go with the standard option….

I don’t want to do it myself. But with such a high amount of money, it’s worth checking whether it makes sense to exclude the work from the contract (and thereby lose benefits like warranty, etc.). I understand that, but why would you then choose some unknown component whose quality you don’t know? Just buy something decent and have it installed by whoever, if you’re not satisfied with the general contractor’s offer. Your tradesperson can install it easily, and, for example, companies like Grohe offer excellent support.
Are the pipes generally standardized (diameter and spacing for cold and hot water) so that they can be installed without having specific fixtures in place, and then the fittings are installed separately? Or do you at least need to know in advance what fittings you want in order to provide the correct specifications?

So I’m asking you again, why would you then install a generic product?

So I’m asking again, why would you then choose to install a no-name product? No, you misunderstood me. If I remove the trade or the installation of the shower, I obviously would not choose a no-name product. I wanted to discuss here in the forum whether it even makes sense and if the price from the general contractor’s subcontractor might still be reasonable.

pagoni202022 Nov 2020 21:41The topic of price for general contractor builds is widely debated, and you won’t find a definitive solution here, especially since many general contractor agreements vary significantly.
If you have someone reliable to install it properly, I would remove it and install what I like, even if the credit isn’t that high. I would personally look online or elsewhere for something nice within a maximum of €300 (about $320).
