Hello,
I received a quote from the plumbing company carrying out the work, and I was almost shocked. I understand that plumbing installations are expensive. However, I find the installation of a rain shower (surface-mounted, with thermostat) for about 1000 € gross quite overpriced (especially since you can find similar products online for around 100-300 € without installation, which shouldn’t be that expensive, especially considering the user manual is available online).
The installation of a faucet we chose is supposed to cost over 300 €.
Is this justified, and does it really result in significantly better quality (I am not an expert), or is this simply taking advantage of the contract situation (take it or leave it)? We are not obliged and could go with the standard option….

Are the pipes generally standardized (diameter and spacing for cold and hot water) so that you can install them without specific object instances, and then install the fixtures yourself?
Or do you at least need to know what you want to use beforehand to provide the corresponding specifications? They should be standardized.

goalkeeper22 Nov 2020 21:54Honestly? Get annoyed, grit your teeth and sign to receive the warranty. Our rain shower from Grohe, including the fittings, cost almost 1400 € (about 1500 USD). That’s just how it is – the plumbing company, the general contractor, and the retailer all make their profit, including installation and the warranty for the installation. They simply charge a premium for that.
We have the Concept 300 installed in both of our showers. It was the private label product at the general contractor’s plumbing wholesaler. Although it’s the only item we took from that brand, they are excellent. I still don’t really see what others could do better. There is just a lot of water coming down from above on a 30cm x 30cm (12in x 12in) area. Our additional handheld showerhead is hardly ever used by my wife either, if that counts as a quality feature.

I don’t want to do it myself. But with such a high amount, it’s worth checking whether it makes sense to remove the work from the contract (and thereby lose benefits like warranty, etc.).You won’t find a plumber who will come for that. Forget it.S
Sparfuchs7723 Nov 2020 07:41I recently asked my plumber the same question about the difference between the cheaper, self-installed options and the more expensive ones from a professional.
- Labor time (installation can easily take 2 hours or more, depending on complexity—mine came almost in individual parts)
- Risk of damage during installation needs to be factored in (broken tiles or similar)
- Warranty
- Availability of replacement parts even after years
- Margin (yes, he also needs to make a profit 😉 )
- Metal and glass components instead of plastic (also on the inside)
- Polished parts for reduced water noise and smoother operation of controls
With my Hansgrohe, I actually can’t feel any plastic parts. Maybe there’s some truth to this, or maybe it’s just the markup. That’s how it was explained to me, at least.

Working time (installation can easily take 2 hours) For example, I was surprised that the base cabinets were delivered fully assembled, not in separate parts like in home improvement stores.
This way, you get a high-quality factory assembly, which then came with some damage in the material.
