Hello Forum,
I am quite new here, and my project is described in the introduction thread.

I want to renovate my staircase and am looking for ideas.

It is a staircase covered with Solnhofen tiles. The base is concrete, and the tiles are glued on. At least I hope so; they might also be cemented.

I find the tiles quite unattractive; I don’t like the size or the color.

I read somewhere that the tiles can be sanded down to create an almost seamless appearance. Is that true?
Is it possible to chemically change the color? Like painting or something similar?

Otherwise, I could imagine cladding the staircase. There are now stone slabs that are only 8mm (0.3 inches) thick and are supposed to be suitable for this. Would you recommend something like that? Or is it better to remove the old tiles entirely and rebuild the staircase? Dirt is not an issue since the house is undergoing a full renovation and won’t be occupied until after that.

You can do light or fine sanding or even have them brushed. I find sanding them completely smooth—especially in the staircase area—to be pointless.

Yes. If you change the step height, you will later experience an "uncomfortable" feeling when using the stairs.
