ᐅ Two external blinds or fingerprint scanners – which would you choose?

Hello,

we still have a small portion of the contingency buffer left for a little extra feature.

We have the choice between the following two options, and we want to pick one:

- Exterior venetian blinds (also called louvered blinds) on two fixed floor-to-ceiling window units next to the front door (south-facing, no roller shutters, frosted glass). Cost including control system and wind sensor is about 1350€ (approximately $1,450).
- Fingerprint scanner on the front door. Total cost is about 1200€ (approximately $1,290).

We are having a hard time deciding. Both have advantages, and we could also choose to skip both if needed.

What would you choose?

*Edit: Since there are quite a few fans of venetian blinds here. Do you also use additional roller blinds that you lower at night for thermal insulation? Or do you take the approach: you have to accept one drawback, and we prefer the benefits of heat insulation – obviously, more heat escapes from our house at night compared to one with roller blinds.

When I was building, I also looked into this, and the general consensus was that the extra thermal protection provided by roller shutters does not make a difference anymore with modern triple-glazed windows.

Hmm, let’s say your window has a U-value of 0.9. If you then lower a roller shutter in front of it, which might even be insulated on the inside (there are products like that nowadays), you get 1) the air layer between the shutter and the glass acting as some insulation, and 2) the insulated shutter itself.

The question is how much of a difference that actually makes. But since it gets coldest at night and the shutter is usually down then, I do think you can notice it.

Yes, you can definitely notice that.

An absolute scientific proof. Sorry, but I simply don’t believe that a plastic roller shutter contributes significantly to thermal insulation.

Quick & dirty... but everyone has the most powerful tool in front of them and can educate themselves.

The major landlords and energy companies claim exactly that.

If you search in the same quick & dirty way for insulated glazing and thermal insulating glazing, the photo compares a window with a U-value of 2.5 with one that has a U-value of 1.1. Comparing apples and oranges.
