ᐅ Fixing distance 450 mm for sink – manufacturer recommendations? Applicable standards?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem: I had the bathroom partition wall retiled (tile over tile), and I removed the installed bathroom fixtures, then, eager as I was, disposed of them immediately. Now I have noticed that all the washbasins displayed at the hardware store have an installation measurement of 280mm (11 inches).

To be honest, I didn’t think much about it when removing them. I assumed the dimensions were standardized like with toilets, so the 450mm (18 inches) spacing would be correct… well, I was wrong.

Can anyone tell me if there are still washbasins available with these bolt spacings? Maybe a manufacturer that specifically uses these dimensions? The old one was a Villeroy & Boch, but on their website, I only found the mentioned 280mm (11 inches) measurements.

Is there perhaps a bracket or mounting console that could be used in an emergency to adjust the wall measurements?

According to the DIN standard, the distances have been 18 cm (7 inches) or 28 cm (11 inches) for many, many years. I can’t imagine you would find a modern washbasin designed for installation at 45 cm (18 inches). I just removed an old Villeroy & Boch basin, probably around 20 years old, and even then the spacing was 28 cm (11 inches).

Is there a bracket available? Sorry, I don’t know.

Why not cut off the old bolts and install new ones?

The 45cm (18 inches) dimension surprises me too... I really couldn’t find any sink with those measurements, except for the basin I dismantled.

How am I supposed to install the new bolts? Wouldn’t I have to knock off the tiles again for that?

I was thinking of carefully cutting out a rectangular strip between the bolts with a cutoff saw to access the bolts. In hindsight, it wouldn’t be visible anyway, since a sink will always be mounted in front of it.

Why? Do you have a solid, masonry wall?

Then just cut off the old bolts and install the new ones accordingly. For that, you only need a drill and 2.95€.

No, I have a stud wall with a frame construction that is already tiled, tile over tile. In a solid masonry wall, it wouldn’t be an issue.
