Hello!

To keep the initial costs of my new build low, I am considering installing a used heating system. I have seen that you can get good used ones for around 2000€.

I think this is generally an interesting idea. Let the heating system last only 6 or 7 years... then you simply replace it with another used one. When buying a car, purchasing used is common practice—so why not do the same with the heating system?

I would be interested to hear your opinion...

Best regards,
Theo

And why does no one install a used system? Probably because they want to sell you a new one!

If something is broken after installation, you would confidently contact the installer and ask them to take responsibility, since they carried out the installation.

For this exact reason, it’s unlikely anyone will agree to do the installation (maybe try checking on MyH... or ebayKleinanzeigen).

So, my last/current very expensive Brötje heating system never had a real defect in 18 years. Therefore, I would be willing to cover the repair costs for a Brötje myself.

I am surprised that installing used heating systems is such an uncommon topic...

The reasons have already been mentioned...
- Where is one supposed to get a used heating system?
- A good condensing boiler costs 1500€ (approximately $1600), so what is there to save?
- For understandable reasons, nobody will install a used unit for you

So, my parents once had a used oil heating system installed in a house that was less than 10 years old. The situation was that they initially rented the house, which had a new type of electric heating installed as a trial, offered at a discounted rate since it wasn’t yet a fully developed system. When the house (previously essentially a company-provided apartment) was sold and my parents had to decide whether to buy or move out, they chose to buy, but it was clear that the electric heating had to be removed, as it would have been too expensive otherwise. At that time, my father was already interested in a heat pump, but the technology was still in its infancy and had several issues, so he preferred to wait a few more years. In the meantime, a used oil heating system was installed, which was later replaced after a few years by an air-to-water heat pump.

I don’t see why anyone would replace a nearly new, smoothly running heating system only to sell it again for a fraction of the original price. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen – of course, you can sometimes find a bargain when a building is being renovated and the old system was undersized and therefore removed. However, you need to make sure that the documentation complies with energy saving regulations and that the heating system is therefore eligible for approval, and that there are no defects or other issues with the unit.

Ahem, but surely we're not talking about a heating system that can heat 140m² (1507 sq ft) and also provide domestic hot water?

For such a (gas) heating system, I have costs well above €4000 in mind...
