Hello Forum

This year, we surprisingly have a large-leaved type of grass in our lawn. What is it, and how can we get rid of it so that we have only fine grass again? See photos. Thank you

Hmm, that could be couch grass..?!
Please do not use Roundup.
This stuff is very difficult to get rid of again.

How do you maintain your lawn? How often do you apply fertilizer? To me, it looks like the lawn is under-fertilized, which allows the more delicate grass species to be pushed out by the hardier varieties.

Best regards,

Hello Curly, don’t you respond to private messages? I had asked you a question.

Hello Sabine,

I have to agree with you. We haven’t done scarifying or fertilizing yet this year. The reason is that we currently have a fairly large construction project in the garden. The patio is being redesigned, flower beds are being established, mowing edges are being installed, a tree has been cut down, etc. In the middle of all this, we haven’t yet given our lawn its annual treatment.

Normally, after scarifying, I use a fertilizer with weed killer from Compo. Will that be enough? A robotic mower will be installed in July.

Does a weed killer help against couch grass?

This is couch grass. Congratulations. The best solution is to dig it out. Fertilizing and scarifying won’t do much against it. This type of grass usually grows faster than the surrounding lawn. If you are a bit persistent, you can temporarily get rid of the couch grass. However, it will likely return eventually through airborne seeds.
