hi

The kitchen floor creaks with every step. What can be done about it? The previous tenants installed chipboard on the floor and laid PVC flooring over it. It's obviously annoying when the floor creaks with every step. Please share suggestions on how to stop this.

An answer to this question would also interest me: My hardwood flooring in the old building is beautiful, but every step is very loud...

Hello everyone,

If a floor creaks, it is because parts of the floor structure are no longer firmly connected. This can happen with floorboards (in older buildings) that have detached from the joists; sometimes just one board is enough, whose nails have become loose. The moving board then rubs against the nails with every step, causing the familiar creaking sound.

With particleboard flooring, the situation is similar; the cause can lie in the connection between the boards or in a broken board. A broken board, however, can usually be seen through the PVC covering. The chipboard panels need to be glued together so that the substructure works as a complete dry screed panel. Additionally, the support for the panels (such as a loose fill) must be fully and evenly installed so the panel does not bend. This issue can only be identified by removing the PVC covering and inspecting the panel construction—time-consuming, but there is no other way.

Loose floorboards are easier to fix. You inspect the floor step by step, board by board, to find the ones that creak. Then, these boards are nailed back to the joists; the nailing points can be identified by the existing row of old nails.

Hello Hertweck, thank you very much for the advice!

I will try it out this weekend right away (re-nailing).

If it’s not too late for my advice, nail at an angle to prevent the floorboards from lifting again.

Hi,
I'm revisiting this topic because I encountered the problem in my parents' house. Some of the floorboards were cracked and the floor was so springy that it became quite noisy. I then fixed the entire floorboarding with nails. Each floorboard received two nails, which I drove in at opposing angles.

That helped, and now we can walk on it properly again.
