Hello everyone,
we would like to install a wood-burning stove in the living room, and the preferred model comes in two versions:
5 kW with heat storage stones
7 kW without heat storage stones

Our living room is about 42 m² (450 sq ft), and the door to the hallway is usually open.
The house was built in the late 1970s, with new windows but no insulation. Heating is provided by oil and radiators.

Which stove would you recommend?
I would prefer a stove with 7 kW and heat storage stones, but unfortunately, that option is not available for this model.

You have a choice between appearance and insulation.
If not insulated, I would go for the 5 kW version. That way, you use the wood more efficiently.

What do you mean by that? The appearance is identical for both stoves.
Why undamped 5kW?

The kW ratings refer to a period of – please excuse this – 2 hours, as is standard. The 7 kW stove does not produce more heating power overall; it simply outputs more during the first two hours. Our masonry stove with a massive thermal store can be fueled with 13 kg (29 lbs) of wood and is nominally rated at only 3.5 kW, while the smaller wood-burning stoves without storage at our children’s place have 6.5 kW or 7 kW with much less fuel. However, the thermal store remains warm for many hours, while the other stoves have long cooled down. The 5 kW option has a different heating profile: it emits less heat initially because it first charges the thermal store. In return, it provides heat for a longer period since the store releases it gradually.

By the way, our 3.5 kW stove heats a room with a volume of over 300 cubic meters (10,600 cubic feet) comfortably for about 20 hours at an outside temperature of 10°C (50°F). The door to the hallway is open.

Why choose an undamped 5 kW (17,000 BTU) stove?

Appearance = watching the fire
Heating = besides the appearance, actually having a heating benefit

Your house is undamped. In this case, it makes sense to not only enjoy the fire visually but also to get warmth. In a passive house or a well-insulated home, the appearance alone would be sufficient; heating would be unnecessary.
