Hello

Since we are building a house next year, we are currently in the planning phase. I was told that the windows must have a certain size relative to the room size.

Does anyone know how this is regulated? The house construction will take place in Upper Austria.

Best regards

You also have to consider the format.
Often, you see rather narrow, floor-to-ceiling windows. With the same glass area, they illuminate the room less than square or horizontal formats.

Is that really the case? I was actually told the opposite. I'm not sure what’s correct now.

Consider the direction of natural light and the room’s geometry.
People also perceive more in width rather than height.
The sun moves as well. With a landscape orientation, you simply get longer (more) daylight exposure throughout the day.

Yes, that makes sense.

Does this 10% rule also apply to the bathroom?

A bathroom is not considered a living space. Otherwise, many apartments wouldn’t be allowed to have an interior bathroom at all.
