Hello

Since we are building a house next year, we are currently in the planning phase. I was told that the windows must have a certain size relative to the room size.

Does anyone know how this is regulated? The house construction will take place in Upper Austria.

Best regards

Ask your architect.
But no matter where you build, due to the brightness everyone wants in their rooms (after all, who wants to live in a bunker), the question is really only theoretical.

The total area of glazing in living rooms and naturally lit common areas must be at least 10%, and at least 12% of the floor area if the room depth exceeds 5m (16 feet). Oberösterreichisches Bautechnikverordnung - OÖ BauTV 1999, ob aktuell, keine Ahnung

That’s basically bunker style.

It’s a subjective matter how bright a room should be for comfort.

I think in standard bedrooms/home offices/children’s rooms, it should be around 20%, but it also depends on the orientation and the surrounding buildings.

In living rooms/dining rooms/kitchens, it can easily be 60-80%.

But the perception varies a lot; for example, my wife actually finds it too open, while I would have preferred even more glass.

Nowadays, too much window area is typically installed; this is a trend. However, I wouldn’t go below 20% of the room’s floor area.

Our living room and dining room have a good 40%, which is very bright and more than sufficient.

How is that supposed to be achieved?
