Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am wondering which tools are really useful to make the assembly as efficient and error-free as possible.

I have noticed that many people only use the included hex key, but I have read that some work better with a cordless drill or other special tools.

I would like to know:

1. Which tools have you used when assembling a Billy?
2. Are there any specific recommendations that make the assembly easier or help protect the screws from damage?
3. How important are screwdrivers or, for example, a hammer in the process?

I look forward to tips from people with firsthand experience, especially those who have assembled the bookshelf multiple times.

I’m still interested in how you view the topic of "pre-drilling"

No, pre-drilling is unnecessary for the Billy shelf and could even be counterproductive. The dowels and screw connections are designed to hold securely without pre-drilling in the pre-made holes.

Pre-drilling risks compromising the precision of the fit because the screw might develop some "play," making the structure unstable.

Better: Insert screws slowly using a torque setting to protect the particleboard.

I have also tried experimentally scratching the holes slightly with a thin drill bit before screwing in, without fully pre-drilling. This had the effect of roughening the wood slightly, allowing the screw to grip more securely.

However, I would not recommend fully pre-drilling, as that does not suit the construction.

For most people, the torque control on a cordless screwdriver is truly the most helpful tool.

Thank you for this valuable information on pre-drilling! I had thought about it before and figured it might help with caution, but it really seems better to trust the intended holes and work carefully with the torque.

This is a relief for me because I don’t have to keep switching between the drill and the screwdriver 🙂
