Hello everyone,

I am currently assembling my first IKEA BESTÅ furniture and want to make sure I pay close attention to all the important pre-drilled holes so that everything is stable and fits perfectly in the end. I’m especially interested in which holes are typically pre-drilled in the panels and which ones are absolutely essential for correct assembly.

I’d also like to know if there are any common pitfalls, like holes that could be confused or openings used for specific assembly steps that must not be overlooked.

Does anyone have experience with which pre-drilled holes are truly functional and important to ensure the BESTÅ system fits precisely and avoids stability issues?

I look forward to your detailed tips, including any advice on hole positions or recommended approaches for orientation.

Basically, I can confirm that the cam lock holes in BESTÅ are mainly found on the side panels and the top/bottom panels of the carcass. These holes are circular and have a larger opening, which is always exactly positioned for the cam lock.

The dowel holes are usually smaller and are also located on the side panels but closer to the edge – they serve to secure the side panels to the bottom and top boards.

The orientation in BESTÅ is designed so that when standing upright, the longer side panels have the cam lock holes mostly near the top and bottom, while the dowels are arranged in the middle.

Be cautious with half-punched openings: they are often intended to be drilled out or removed if needed, for optional fittings or cable passages.

If you work with standard builds without modifications, use only the fully punched openings for dowels and cam locks. This way you stay on the safe side and maintain stability.
