Hello,
I am planning to pave my driveway soon. Now I am considering how deep to lay the gravel base. For frost protection, I will use gravel with a grain size of 0/32. I am thinking about 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 inches) – would that be sufficient?
Thank you for your information.

Kurt1985-13 May 2014 00:54Hi Marcel,
If the paved path is going to be driven on, a 20 cm (8 inches) thick layer of crushed stone is sufficient. The grain size you mentioned is adequate. However, below that, a frost-resistant substructure is necessary. This is important to prevent the paving from heaving during frost or thaw conditions. The topsoil must be removed and replaced layer by layer with crushed stone, compacting each layer thoroughly. The frost depth varies depending on the location and ranges between 80 and 120 cm (31 and 47 inches).
Best regards

Hello,
I still have a question regarding the base layer. Yesterday, one building material supplier offered a mineral quartzite mixture 0/32, and another one offered a basalt with mineral mixture 0/32.
Are there any differences between these, and what would be recommended?
Thank you very much.

Annegret-15 May 2014 06:54Hi Marcel,
It is very important that you follow the guidelines provided by the paving manufacturer. My husband did the same back then and it worked out well. We had a problem with ants. It was recommended to us to use gravel, which my husband also did. It still looks really good today.
Best regards
