Good morning everyone, I am planning to set up a few Billy shelves in a relatively small room. My main question is: What should I consider when placing Billy shelves in small rooms, especially regarding space optimization, room appearance, and safety? I want to avoid making the room feel even more cramped or the shelves becoming impractical. Does anyone have experience with the proportions, suitable placement options, or accessories that might be helpful? Thanks in advance for your tips!
I want to speak up in favor of the functionality of the Billy shelves, but also offer some critical points: especially in small rooms, you need to carefully consider how many units and which versions you choose. From my observation, many people place the shelves against any wall without leaving enough space around them. This restricts the flow of the room significantly. Additionally, the storage is only as effective as the organization inside – without boxes or organizers, it quickly looks messy, which makes the small space appear even smaller.

I fixed the shelf to the wall at three points and use shelves of various heights to stay flexible. Additionally, I covered the back panel of the bookcase with a thin mirror – this makes the room feel much more open and spacious 🙂
I really like the idea of the mirror, but it also seems a bit challenging. You have to be careful that it doesn’t become too reflective, so you don’t end up seeing yourself when the shelves are completely messy. 😉 I want to emphasize the safety corner once again: I have seen how a Billy-style bookcase can become really dangerous if it tips over, especially when there are children in the household. A high-quality anchoring to the wall is therefore not just a recommendation, but an absolute must.
Thank you for the very helpful input so far! I found the different perspectives on color, lighting, and organization especially interesting. Regarding organization: What types of boxes or accessories work best for you to keep shelving units organized in small spaces? Are there specific models or materials you would recommend that don’t significantly reduce the available shelf space?
I usually use sturdy plastic boxes from Ikea that fit well in the depth of Billy shelves. They are lightweight but durable. An alternative is fabric boxes, which are easy to take out and more flexible. This way, the space remains well usable and organization works perfectly.
