ᐅ What should I do if IKEA Hemnes shelves are not hanging level?

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Hemnes shelves: after assembly, they just won’t hang straight. Despite careful construction and alignment, the shelves always end up slightly crooked, which shows through small gaps on the sides or an uneven overall appearance. I have already checked whether the wall is even and used a level as well. I’m wondering what else I can do to achieve a truly straight result. Could it be due to improper wall fixing, or are there hidden assembly tips that IKEA doesn’t clearly communicate? I would be very grateful for any advice that helps, especially from anyone who has had similar experiences and knows what to watch out for.

Did you check the shelves before installing them? Sometimes they are not completely flat. Also, check the centers of the dowels to make sure they are properly aligned.

I know it can be really frustrating when shelves just won’t hang straight – almost as if they have a mind of their own! 😄 Sometimes it helps to check the level at a different height or position – walls aren’t always as perfectly straight as we think. A little trick, like using small shims or self-adhesive felt pads on the wall mounts, can work wonders and help compensate for minor unevenness.

Thank you for the previous suggestions. I actually checked the wall with a laser level; it’s not perfectly flat, but not significantly crooked either. I will check again this weekend to see if the wall plugs are really secure. The idea of slotted holes sounds interesting—I’ll take a closer look to see if the shelf has something like that, or maybe I’ll get suitable brackets. @leteo: The idea of washers is good. Are they better than wooden shims, or how stable are they in use? I’m a bit skeptical about whether that will hold reliably.

I completely agree. I personally corrected slight unevenness with small rubber bumpers typically used for furniture. They are flexible and don’t slip like wooden shims. However, this should really only be a last step after everything else is properly in place.

Wedges often do not hold. Securely fastening washers provides stability.

Check if all screws are fully tightened. Sometimes a loose screw can cause wobbling and give the impression of misalignment.
