Hello everyone, I recently noticed that the back panel of my IKEA Billy bookcase has torn in one spot. Since this back panel is important for the stability of the entire unit and is made of thin particleboard, I am wondering: what are the best ways to professionally repair this damage? Should the back panel be completely replaced, should the tears be glued, or reinforced with additional material? I would appreciate any advice, especially regarding durable and practical solutions.
I wonder if simply replacing the back panel is really sufficient. After all, the stability of a shelving unit is largely influenced by the back panel. A straightforward replacement made from supposedly equally thick material might behave differently over time, potentially causing new issues. My recommendation would be to carefully measure the existing back panel and choose a sturdy alternative material, possibly something stronger than the original cardboard, to ensure durability. Does anyone have experience with reinforced back panels for BILLY shelves?

Plywood with a thickness of two to three millimeters (around 0.08 to 0.12 inches) works well, adds stability, and is easy to work with. It is important that the back panel fits perfectly so the shelf does not wobble.Similar topics
