Hello everyone,

first of all, great praise to all of you here. I have been following for some time, and this is truly a very good and helpful forum.

Now to my question:
We are currently planning our single-family home and want to take the opportunity to install a water-to-water heat pump for heating. However, I am a complete beginner in this area and somewhat lost in the world of heat pumps and heating options.

My question relates to domestic hot water preparation. How is this best combined in this context?
Is it possible to use a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery for domestic hot water preparation, or is that not cost-effective?
Solar might also be an option since the roof slope faces south.

The appointment with the energy consultant is still pending, as the architect’s plans are not yet finalized.

Thanks for your advice.

A heat pump should generally always also provide domestic hot water, as its efficiency means that the costs for heating domestic hot water are relatively low. However, there are many different ways to achieve this, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. What is certain, though, is that installing a solar thermal system in combination with a heat pump is rarely, if ever, economically viable. Still, there are cases where it can make sense, and the integration of heat recovery must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. It is best to get advice from a heat pump specialist.

Hi WPC Rubigen,
Thank you for your post. I agree with your point about greywater treatment. That makes sense. I had also looked into it beforehand, as it is quite a complex topic.
Best regards

I agree with that, and it is generally not economical. Still, I think it is a good solution if the financial aspect is not the main focus.
