ᐅ Robot vacuum, handheld vacuum, vacuum-and-mop function — what are your thoughts?

Good morning everyone,

Since I could no longer find the robot vacuum thread using the search function, I have now started this new thread.

Currently, we still have an AEG upright vacuum cleaner, but I’m a bit annoyed by its suction power and the way the vacuum head drags behind when moving. My wife remembers the old dark green Vorwerk handheld vacuums from her parents’ house, on which I even used to ride along as a small child.

Last weekend, we visited the consumer fair in Nuremberg, where we gathered a lot of information about houses and construction, and we couldn’t avoid stopping by the Vorwerk booth as well.

In the mentioned robot vacuum thread, the Vorwerk vacuum and mop combo handheld was already discussed, so I based my research on that.

We were able to test the vacuum thoroughly and were quite impressed with the vacuum and mop function. One drawback we noticed is that the complete unit feels a bit heavy when lifting it, for example, onto stairs. Otherwise, the device easily glides across the floor.
Also, the filter system might be a downside for us, as expensive replacement filters can be a significant ongoing cost.

My question to you: does anyone have experience with the Kobold VK200 vacuum and mop model or maybe other comparable models and can share experience over several weeks or months?

Regards,
Andreas

I believe if this is a hobby, you can allow yourself something like this once in a while.

However, we can only consider the quality class of household appliances again after the loan repayment is completed.

But it must never ever break at that price...

Exactly, a hobby that I’m currently pursuing (the wife needs to be taken care of), so it’s on my mind right now. So far, we haven’t made the payment yet, which of course doesn’t reduce the huge price in my opinion. Then you’re short on equity.

At that price, it definitely can’t break down...

That’s exactly the point... it really should last at least 20 years.

Regarding the price of the bags (6 pieces for 20€). Hm... that means you depend on buying more and more. Calculating it out... with the current AEG, I just empty the bin and clean the filter with a compressor, and that’s good enough.

Well, that sounds a bit pessimistic. We just bought a dryer from Miele for nearly 1000€ (around $1100).

A 1200€ (about $1300) vacuum cleaner is definitely not necessary. That's simply wasted money, mostly going to commissions (typical with companies like Vorwerk). A good vacuum cleaner shouldn't cost more than 200€ (around $220), and at 300€ (about $330) with some extras and accessories, you really reach the upper limit.

Handheld vacuum cleaners tend to be relatively heavy and awkward, so you need to decide if that’s what you really want. Quickly vacuuming sofa corners isn’t as easy as it sounds.

We have a Makita cordless vacuum. Its suction power is poor, but it’s completely fine for picking up a few lint and dirt during the week.

For our house, we bought an affordable model from Miele (S8340). Its suction power is quite excessive and frequently picks up too much (just recently it sucked up fabric coasters while vacuuming ^^). It’s the first vacuum cleaner I’ve had where you need to lower the power, otherwise the upright vacuum sticks to tiles. I felt 170€ (around $190) was a fair price. For a few euros more, we also got a value pack of original bags and a 5-year warranty.

Among other things, we have been using the mentioned Vorwerk vacuum mop for 3 months now. For 1300 euros, you get significantly more accessories than just the mop attachment. The electric brush should also be included, the carpet brush, and plenty of plastic attachments (for whatever purposes).

After 3 months of use on about 80m (260 feet) of floor space, the bag is nowhere near full. I would estimate it’s maybe half full, despite having cats. So at least with the bags, you really get a lot of use, since they can hold around 4 liters (0.9 gallons). It doesn’t make sense to talk about paying over 20 euros for a few bags.

Ok, that’s quite a statement @toxicmolotow, but that’s exactly why we’re having this conversation.

Yes, in the set we saw at the trade fair, there was a standalone vacuum unit as well as the vacuum-mop unit, this electric brush, and also a starter set with bags, etc. However, I didn’t ask for a detailed price calculation since I still didn’t want to buy it right away even with the €150 (approximately $160) discount at the fair.

Do you have the handheld vacuum or the version with the vacuum unit that you push along behind it?
