Hello everyone,

Our future house has a cold roof. Since only certain items should be stored there, we want to get special storage boxes that provide protection against external temperature fluctuations as well as moisture. Regular plastic boxes that we already have are not very suitable for this purpose. Can you recommend any specific boxes that you use yourselves?

For the roof: I like it when you can already see from the outside what’s inside.

At some point, I got myself a Dymo (a label maker). With the transparent boxes, you can only roughly see what’s inside, and it’s hard to tell whether it’s the wetsuit or the latex catsuit. :p 😉

It is always quite frustrating when you only have the catsuit with you while diving.

Ok, those are the standard storage boxes from IKEA. I wouldn’t have thought that the items inside would stay dry given the temperature fluctuations that can occur in a cold roof space.

They only stay dry to a limited extent. Paper absorbs moisture quite well, so things can be fine for a long time. I would rather not store electronic items in plastic boxes in an attic, as significant condensation can form with extreme weather changes. They handle cardboard boxes better. You would almost have to seal the plastic boxes airtight and include silica gel packets to prevent moisture ingress. I observed this clearly with a toolbox. Everything made of steel had started to rust slightly after just one year.
Glass Christmas ornaments also lose their shine quickly in cold attic spaces.

Forget about airtight boxes in the unheated attic space. The temperature fluctuations between day and night would cause the boxes to expand or collapse. The boxes constantly have to equalize pressure and, fortunately, they are not airtight. Cold air enters every night and warmer air escapes during the day; if this happens quickly, condensation can form as well. That is why the boxes stay dry, and as already mentioned, do not store sensitive items in the unheated attic.
