Hello everyone,

Our future house has a cold roof. Since only certain items should be stored there, we want to get special storage boxes that provide protection against external temperature fluctuations as well as moisture. Regular plastic boxes that we already have are not very suitable for this purpose. Can you recommend any specific boxes that you use yourselves?

Maybe vacuum-seal it and then put it in the box?

If at all, then with a vacuum device and packed as a dry (cold) diving suit. The warmer you wrap something, the more moisture it contains. A vacuum cleaner is enough to remove the air from the bag.

We have a huge cold roof space where we practically store everything: laundry, fabrics, paper, office supplies, shoes, winter clothes, summer clothes, winter sports equipment, Christmas decorations, toys, mattresses, tools... The only exceptions are liquids, food, and plants.

Nothing rusts up there, and nothing ever feels “damp”… at most it’s “cold” right now.
What I love the most is that I can dry my laundry up there.

I think that’s awesome, but I don’t really understand it 😀 Why does it work for you but not for others? Why doesn’t anything rust in your space? You’re also storing fairly sensitive items there. Does anyone have an explanation for this? There’s no better alternative to a basement than yours 😀

Actually, the cold roof stores all items dry, at around -20 to +50 degrees Celsius (–4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit).
The basement also does, at 15-22 degrees Celsius (59-72 degrees Fahrenheit).

The basement as well, between 15-22 degrees Celsius (59 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit).

I did write basement replacement, not storage space replacement…..

We have now been living in our house for almost 5 years. The cold roof is still completely dry and free of rust. We even store our box of drill bits up there. The drill itself is also stored there (in the cardboard box!). Neither the drill bits nor the machine show any signs of damage! One summer, I accidentally left some drill bits outside under the patio roof for a few weeks… they ended up rusting. I’m also a bit surprised by this and can’t really explain how it works. We have a temperature and humidity sensor in the roof, which shows a historical range between -11 and +40 degrees Celsius (12 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit). The relative humidity ranged between 29 and 95%.
