Hello Forum,

We have a noise issue with two of our interior doors (children’s room and bedroom). Both doors let through a lot of sound; it’s almost as if the door isn’t closed at all.

Both doors are solid core doors from Hörmann. The problem is the oversized door openings. For both openings, part of the wall had to be chiseled out before installing the doors, which resulted in a gap between the door frame and the wall of about 3 cm (1.2 inches) on one side and 1 cm (0.4 inches) on the other. We have already stuffed hemp insulation wool loosely into the gaps, but subjectively, it hasn’t made much difference.

Are there materials we can use to fill the gaps that provide better sound insulation and are safe for health? We have a controlled ventilation system, and the gap under the door is necessary for airflow, but we would prefer not to fill the gaps with mineral wool since it would be constantly exposed to the ventilation airflow.

Would compressed sealing tape (used in window installation) be a good option? Are there other possible solutions?

Forcefully fill it with suitable expanding foam sealant all the way into every corner.
