I hope this is the right forum.
My balcony on the upper floor is unfortunately not covered. Above me is a roof terrace, and below me is the ground floor.
The balcony extends 5 x 2 m (16 x 6.5 ft) to the south side and about 2 x 2 m (6.5 x 6.5 ft) to the east side, forming an L-shape.
I want to cover the balcony door on the south side with a type of lean-to roof measuring 3 x 2 m (10 x 6.5 ft).
It would be a simple steel structure with plexiglass panels and a small gutter at the front edge of the balcony (to prevent water from running down to the neighbor). Under the lean-to roof, I would like to hang a sunshade in summer—nothing large. The goal is to protect the balcony door from rain, sun, and snow.
Next to me, I have a neighbor with a similar balcony, but facing southwest. They are also considering making some modifications.
Can someone advise me on what to watch out for?
Should I first consult a metalworker, or contact the local authority about building permit / planning permission requirements? Or should I start with a structural engineer?
My balcony floor is a "light granite slab" that looks like hospital flooring. It doesn’t seem very stable. I might also consider installing a wooden decking surface over it...
The lean-to roof should be attached to the wall around the balcony door and at the front railing.
Who can please give some advice?
Thank you very much
