Hello everyone, I have the following problem: my Malm chest of drawers from IKEA is rubbing against the frame on the second and third drawers. The drawers no longer slide smoothly and get stuck when pulling out or pushing in. I have already tried cleaning the tracks, but it didn’t improve. What could be causing this, and how can I fix the rubbing? Are there any tips for readjusting or placing shims under the drawer slides? I would appreciate any helpful advice, as I would like to repair it myself.

Drawers in the Malm series often stick due to dirty or misaligned slides. I recommend first removing the slides completely to check for any deformation or foreign objects. Another common issue is a detached or bent plastic guide responsible for smooth gliding. After thoroughly cleaning with isopropanol, you can realign the slides. Lightly sanding any sharp edges on the drawer front can also help reduce friction. It is important to install the slides exactly parallel to each other, as even small deviations can cause scraping.

I can confirm this. Especially with Malm drawers, the small plastic stoppers that guide the sliding mechanism sometimes come loose. A simple but targeted replacement of the stoppers or adding new sliding felt pads on the inside can make a big difference. Additionally, it’s important to check screws that may loosen over time and alter the alignment of the rails.

In my opinion, this solution is not always advisable, as sanding can affect the precise fit of the drawer. The appearance of the furniture may also be compromised. Instead, before making any mechanical adjustments, it is important to check whether the frame has warped due to moisture or if the installation was incorrect. Warping is often the reason for sanding and can sometimes be resolved by minimal readjustment of the slides or by slightly correcting the tensions in the drawer.

To solve the problem in the long term, I recommend the following approach:

1. Completely remove the drawer and clean the slides with a damp cloth and mild soap.
2. Check if the screws of the drawer slide rails are still tight and tighten them if necessary.
3. Inspect the plastic guides for secure fit and any damage.
4. If the edges still rub despite correct installation, carefully sand the edges of the drawer with fine sandpaper—very gently, to avoid making significant changes.
5. Optional: Using dry graphite powder or silicone spray can improve sliding performance, but avoid oil as it tends to make the slides sticky.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to noticeably reduce the rubbing.

As a supplement, here is a brief step-by-step guide on how to properly inspect Malm drawers and fix any rubbing issues:

- Step 1: Remove the drawer and take off the runners. Check for any damage, especially to the rollers.
- Step 2: Clean the runners and rollers thoroughly. Dust or fiber residues can block smooth movement.
- Step 3: Check the alignment of the runners on both the cabinet body and the drawer. They must be perfectly parallel and straight.
- Step 4: Tighten or replace any bent or loose screws.
- Step 5: If edges are rubbing, gently sand them with fine sandpaper (400 grit or higher).
- Step 6: Finally, reinstall the drawer and test its function.

Warning: Avoid applying grease or oil on the runners, as this can cause them to stick and attract dirt.
