Hello dear forum,

We are two adults and two small children living in a house built in the 1960s. The house is situated on a slope and is built into the hillside on the north side. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are still more or less in their original condition from the year of construction and therefore require renovation.

Our first bathroom renovation will focus on an approximately 8 m² (86 sq ft) bathroom in the basement. The bathroom is located on the north side of the house and only has a small light well window (width: 94 cm (37 inches), height: 55 cm (22 inches), sill height: 155 cm (61 inches)), so the room is not very bright.

This naturally raises the question of lighting but also ventilation. There are no mold issues in this room; however, it has only been used sparingly in recent years since it only has a bathtub. Before going into these details, I would like to first address some basic points.

At the moment, I’m somewhat uncertain about how to design the bathroom given its limited size. The room is in the basement, so the placement of sanitary fittings is quite flexible.

Here is the floor plan for you:

The door will be replaced and could be made to open outwards in the future if this would be beneficial.

We would like to have a shower, preferably without a door. Whether it can be at floor level remains to be checked. The build-up of the screed is currently unknown. Regarding the shower dimensions, we are unsure. We would like it to be spacious; however, lacking experience, we don’t know what dimensions are minimally practical. It should not be the case that the entire bathroom floods after every shower.

If the floor plan allows for a bathtub, that would be good. However, if the shower size would have to be compromised too much because of this, a bathtub would not be necessary. There is another bathroom upstairs with a bathtub that also needs renovation.

Here is a first draft from a local company:

The design includes everything one would expect. Still, I’m somewhat dissatisfied with it because the shower seems too small, and I do not want a shower door. I do have a preference for a walk-in shower, even if that might not be entirely rational ;-)

I would be very grateful if you could comment on this draft and possibly provide some design ideas. Thank you!

Best regards,
Konrad
