Hello,

We have been considering building a thatched roof house for some time. Since we live near the Elbe in Lower Saxony, these roofs are quite common. However, our architect (at least one of the three we consulted) advised against it, saying the climate is too humid and there would be a risk of mold growth.

Who has experience with this, and how real is this risk? Interestingly, we want a thatched roof precisely because of the climate...

Best regards

In post #2 of the thread https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/reetdacheinfamilienhaus-Bauträger-spezialisten.28024/, I already recommended consulting not an architect, but a roofer who regularly works with that type of roofing.

The thread https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/erfahrungen-mit-reetdach.17581/#post-159831 has also dealt with this question.

I have not looked into how the energy saving regulations (energy performance standards) have changed things for thatched roofs, and what potential complications may result.

It should not be forgotten that every roofing material has its suitable range of application, and for example, I would not consider thatch for a roof pitch of 30° (30 degrees).

Hi,

Yes, you have, and of course, I have also contacted the specialists/roofers. As always, there are pros and cons.

Often, however, there are already experience reports in the forum, which result in recommendations.

Thatched roofing comes up here in the forum a bit more often than Halley’s Comet – but what I often see here are advertisements from Emil von Elling, who also offer thatched roof houses in their range.
