ᐅ Rainwater Harvesting System – Is a Shallow Underground Tank Frost-Resistant?

@tomHello home builders,
We will start building our house in June (new solid construction, developer Heinz von Heiden). After many weeks of brainstorming and planning, we have completed the consultation and architectural meetings with Heinz von Heiden, and have now submitted the building permit / planning permission application so that construction can begin. One point in the property description set by the city concerns rainwater harvesting. Generally, it is a good idea to use rainwater for garden irrigation or as non-potable water for use inside the house. The city requires us to install a minimum of 30 liters per square meter of roof area for rainwater collection. Since the groundwater level on our property is at 1.2 m (4 feet), I am worried about installing an underground tank. Could the tank be lifted or displaced by groundwater pressure? So, I would need to install a shallow tank. However, then frost protection cannot be ensured.

Who has experience with cost-effective rainwater harvesting systems, and would you recommend concrete or polyethylene tanks? Does a water storage tank need to be installed frost-proof? Is rainwater harvesting worthwhile for the entire house or just the garden, and from when does a domestic water pump system pay off?
Many thanks and best regards,
@tom

Hello,
we would also like to use rainwater and greywater from the sink/shower for toilet flushing. For initial cost reasons, I am interested to know if such a system can be retrofitted at a later stage.
Does anyone have experience with this? And does anyone know how much this might cost?
Best regards
Chillyg
