Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen renovation and want to professionally cut and work on the Ikea Metod countertops myself. I am particularly interested in which tools and techniques work best to keep the cut edges clean and prevent the countertop from fraying or splintering. I would also like to know the best way to seal the edges to keep moisture out and ensure the countertop is durable. Additionally, are there any tips for fixing or leveling uneven walls? Thanks in advance for all detailed and practical advice.

Corners are best cut using a guide rail. Silicone as moisture protection is too unreliable; it’s better to use edge glue and clear varnish.

For precision when making freehand cuts at corners, here is a tip: It’s best to transfer the cutting measurements using a carpenter’s square or a bevel gauge and mark them on the panel with a pencil. Then mark the line with masking tape and saw along a guide rail. For finishing, I recommend slightly rounding the edge with 240-grit sandpaper before applying edge glue or PU adhesive—apply it thinly and evenly. Afterwards, allow it to cure thoroughly to maintain its protective effect.

Regarding moisture sealing: Silicone does seal but remains flexible on the surface and does not penetrate the material well. PU adhesive, on the other hand, hardens firmly, is more durable, and also bonds mechanically to the edge. This is especially important in the kitchen, where water can sometimes splash.

It is important to properly support the countertop while cutting. Silicone is often used but is not ideal. Edge glue or edge protection strips are better.

Guide rails help achieve precise cutting, especially straight cuts without fixed stops. Edge banding protects the cut edge against moisture, while silicone often only provides surface protection.
