after moving in, we are now looking for lighting, specifically a pendant light for our dining table.
The dining table (1 meter wide, 2 meters long) is centered directly under the ceiling power outlet.
We definitely want a fixture with multiple lights, so around 3 to 4 bulbs.
Regarding the height, I have read that the lights should hang at least 60cm (24 inches) above the tabletop to avoid being in the way.
However, we are unsure about the width and length. With 80cm (31 inches) wide fixtures, there is still a decent selection, but anything larger becomes more limited. Would you consider 80cm (31 inches) sufficient for a 200cm (79 inches) table?
The table can be extended to 3 meters (118 inches), but that is rarely done and only for bigger gatherings or similar occasions.

Eccentric and playful: e.g., Mooi Perch
Elegant with excellent lighting: e.g., Less & More Ylux, Tobias Grau Falling Trace
Understated: One of those horizontal bars with LED strip lighting – definitely see them in operation, the differences are huge
Industrial, Scandinavian, sculptural...
The Ylux models have a focus lens, which solves the "problem" with an extended table.

SenorRaul726 Mar 2020 12:51Thank you. For me, the main concern is the width of the lamp. At 80cm (31.5 inches), it might look "too narrow" on a 200cm (78.7 inches) table or, in the worst case, not provide enough light for the table ends.

Would you find 80cm suitable for a 200cm table?Of course, 80cm (31.5 inches) is sufficient. Even 60cm (23.6 inches) can work. Many families have a 180cm (71 inches) table with a single fixture, but multiple fixtures arranged in a row are actually a good option. You might also want to consider how you use your table: who sits where, and what activities take place?
Sitting at the short end playing cards requires different lighting than dining.
By the way, we solved it this way: flexible.
A 2-meter (6.6 feet) table, lights covering one meter (3.3 feet), because I often work at one corner of the table.

If you sit at the short side playing cards, you need different lighting than when dining.
By the way, here’s how we solved it: adjustable.
A 2-meter (79 inches) table, lights on a 1-meter (39 inches) track, since I often work at a corner of the table. Thanks for the insight!
Good point. Our table has six chairs—two at the ends and two on each side. We always sit opposite each other on the sides, but not centered at the table; more to the left or right, closer to the ends.
Maybe we will actually go for 80 cm (31.5 inches). As I said, the options get more limited above that. And right now, you can only really browse and order these things online anyway...
