Hello everyone,

I built a drywall partition in the basement. The wall is just meant to separate the storage room from the "hobby room."

I would like to keep the door opening open, so no fixed door needs to be installed.

I left the door opening with standard dimensions, allowing for a door width of 760mm (30 inches) and a height of 1980mm (78 inches). The entire wall is 100mm (4 inches) thick.

Since I don’t actually want a fixed door and only want a doorway frame without hinges, I was quite shocked by how expensive it is.

In fact, I couldn’t find anything like this at any hardware store (at least, I couldn’t find one). Online, these frames cost around 140€ plus 60€ shipping.

In other words: I can’t get below 200€ just for having a visually nice open doorway.

Does anyone have an idea for an alternative? I also considered just plastering everything over, including the drywall profile inside. Certainly not the nicest solution, but possibly doable. The only problem is that the drywall sheets around the door opening are never perfectly cut...

Somehow, I don’t see myself spending 200€ just on the frame.

I’m open to any advice or tips! Thanks!

Use wood and build it yourself? In the end, it’s just 9 boards cut at an angle, glued together, and painted. It doesn’t have to support a heavy door.

PS:
I can pick up a CPL white door frame at the local Hornbach in 2 hours for 99 EUR. Where are you looking and for what exactly?

If you really don’t need a door and just want a clean finish, I would simply use neatly cut corner protection profiles and filler compound. Cover the edges with them, fill, sand, paint – done. It looks much tidier than exposed drywall edges, costs almost nothing, and is more than enough for a basement room.

If you want it to look a bit more upscale: MDF trim from the hardware store, miter cut, glued on, painted. It looks like a simple frame without much effort. Often available pre-primed white or raw for under 10€ per piece. You can easily keep the total cost under 50€.

What’s wrong with a standard door frame for 99€? We’re just talking about a storage or hobby room in the basement. There might be a cheaper option, but probably none that requires less labor time.

Yes, the labor time should not be underestimated, especially since you also need to have the necessary tools.
A ready-made door frame can be installed in 30 minutes, while in that time you haven't even finished planning the custom-built frame.

I would simply use a standard door frame: 92 euros
Complete frame P… CPL white (similar to RAL 9010) 198.5x73.5x9.0 cm (78.1x28.9x3.5 inches) Left-handed
It fits wall thicknesses up to 11 cm (4.3 inches).

Do not screw in the hinges, just cover the holes with white plugs, and it’s done.
