Hello everyone,

I am currently working on maintaining my Billy shelves and have a rather specific question: When is the best time to oil the hinges of the Billy shelves to ensure long-term and sustainable functionality?

I am interested not only in the best time of day but also in any special conditions that might favor the oiling process, such as temperature, humidity, or similar factors.

I want to avoid a situation where the hinges run more smoothly only temporarily, but then start squeaking again quickly or the mechanism wears out prematurely. Are there any recommendations, experiences, or specific types of oil that are preferred?

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

It is best to oil the hinges in the evening when the temperature is a bit cooler. This allows the oil to penetrate better. Avoid damp or dusty environments to prevent dirt from sticking. A simple WD-40 or a specialized lubricating oil is sufficient.

First of all, thank you for the detailed question; it makes providing targeted answers much easier.

Regarding the best minutes—or more precisely, the optimal time window—for oiling the Billy shelf hinges, here is what I can say: It is indeed not only the time of day that matters, but also the indoor climate and the condition of the hinge material.

An ideal room temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) with a relative humidity between 40 and 60%. This ensures that the oil neither evaporates too quickly nor allows moisture to enter the mechanism, which could promote rust.

The best times of day are usually in the morning after airing out the room or in the early evening when the outdoor temperature is more stable. This helps prevent condensation, which can otherwise lead to corrosion.

Regarding the types of oil: A fine, thin machine oil is recommended, as it penetrates deeply into the hinge joints without sticky residues or attracting dust. Greasy or thicker oils may offer more protection but are harder to apply and tend to attract more dirt.

I personally prefer sprays containing PTFE (Teflon), as they also reduce friction. However, application must be precise to avoid any residue on the wood.

Finally, a note: Make sure to oil the hinges only after cleaning them with a dry cloth. Dust or residues can reduce the effectiveness.

Perhaps you could mention how old your Billy shelves are and whether the hinges have been treated before? That would allow for a more precise answer.

Interesting claim, but temperature alone doesn’t determine success.

What exactly is “success” in such a simple procedure? Longer wear protection? Or just quieter hinges the next day? The problem often is that people tend to overcomplicate things. Clearly, the mechanics of the Billy hinges are simple – they don’t require a delicate technical routine every minute of the day.

I agree with that, but I also expect some benefit — not a situation where everything is perfectly done under ideal conditions, and the cabinet still squeaks after just a few weeks. Maybe the problem lies much more with the materials or manufacturing quality than with the timing of oiling?

Therefore, I find the whole idea of the “best time to oil for success” a bit overrated. Oiling never hurts, no matter when you do it.

Just my provocative opinion ;-)
