Hello everyone, I have a somewhat unusual question and hope to benefit from your experience: my dog seems to have chewed on the corners of my KALLAX shelf unit — these are the typical white ABS plastic edge protectors that IKEA uses. The corners are partially gnawed and look damaged. Since I don’t want to replace the entire shelf right away, I’m wondering if there are any ways to repair or replace these chewed corners without having to dismantle the whole KALLAX? Maybe someone has a practical tip for fixing or modifying such damage, ideally in a way that is durable and visually appealing? I’m open to all ideas, thanks in advance!

A quick tip: Wood glue or wood filler does not work well on ABS! Always use adhesives or fillers specifically designed for plastics; otherwise, nothing will hold.

It’s interesting that so many repair solutions are suggested here. What bothers me is that hardly anyone mentions how to keep the dog away from the furniture permanently. Does anyone have tips on how to completely stop the chewing? Because every repair is ultimately an investment if the problem isn’t resolved.

This is very important! First and foremost, you should train the dog not to chew and provide enough chew toys of its own. Additionally, you can use scent sprays or barriers that animals find unpleasant (for example, citrus or bitter substances). It is also important to remove or cover any existing damage to prevent further interest. Patience and positive reinforcement are the key factors here.

Regarding keeping the dog away: Thanks for the advice! My dog has actually learned that the corners are off-limits since I have been consistent with training and provided separate toys. Therefore, I hope the repair will really pay off in the long run, as he is currently showing no interest.

I will now try using epoxy resin and paint, while also looking again for edge protection profiles. Thanks to everyone for the tips so far – great community here!
