I would like to remove a wall in my house to enlarge the living room and connect it to the kitchen. I would like to know how much I should expect to spend and what I can or should do myself.

This mainly depends on whether the wall is load-bearing or not. If it is, I would need to install a beam (right?), which I definitely couldn’t do on my own. Simply removing a non-load-bearing wall wouldn’t be a problem.

My question is, how do I find out if the wall is load-bearing or not? Who can tell me this? Do I need to consult a structural engineer?

Hello,

yes, consulting a structural engineer is the right approach! They might also be able to provide an estimate of the costs. However, they will need basic information about the structural design of your house; otherwise, they won’t be able to help you much!

Always consult a structural engineer! Otherwise, it can turn out badly. If it is a load-bearing wall, steel beams must be installed. Depending on the length, these can easily weigh 100 kg (220 lbs) or more, but can be installed independently with help. So, ask experts for structural advice and do not attempt the work alone.
