Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and unfortunately noticed that the surface is extremely prone to scratches. Even placing light objects on it or occasionally brushing against it with a key causes noticeable scratches on the white painted surface.

I’m interested to know if others have had similar experiences and if there are any specific ways to protect or treat the surface to make it more durable.

Does anyone have tips for care or recommend protective films? Or is this product simply too delicate for everyday use?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Regarding protective films:

There are transparent protective films with a self-adhesive backing specifically designed for furniture and interior protection. These films are relatively discreet and, if of good quality, can protect the surface quite well. However, the adhesive side may not remain durable for long under heat and humidity, and the appearance is naturally somewhat compromised.

An alternative is to use transparent table protection sheets made of rigid PVC or polycarbonate, which can be secured with clips or lightly fixed in place. These sheets are stable without adhesive and do not damage the surface.

It is important to thoroughly clean the surface before application to avoid dirt particles and dust, as these can cause bubbles underneath.

I’m really surprised by how many people are bothered by scratches on the Kallax! I think you shouldn’t expect too much considering the price. For everyday use at home, it usually works fine. 🙂

My tips: I picked out some nice decorative fabrics to cover it with when I use the shelf for parties or special occasions. It works well and looks quite nice.

Otherwise, I believe the charm of the Kallax mainly comes from its simple, straightforward look—you just shouldn’t be too picky. And hey—scratches tell a story, don’t they? 😉

You should always avoid placing sharp or dirty objects directly on the surface.

Felt pads under pots or decorations are mandatory.

If this is not an option, a protective board must be placed on top.

Hello,

I understand the concerns about scratches. Especially on white surfaces, even small marks become very noticeable.

The Kallax is known for offering good value for money, and its surface is a melamine resin-coated chipboard, which is more sensitive compared to solid wood or higher-quality finishes.

To protect it, I recommend:

- Attaching felt pads under objects

- Using a transparent protective film or panel if needed (choose matte films if glare is an issue)

- Avoiding placing sharp objects directly on the surface

- Using gentle cleaning agents, not abrasive cleaners

This will significantly extend the lifespan of the surface.

If scratches have already appeared, there is little way to make them invisible, since the coating cannot be repainted.
