Hello everyone, I recently bought a KALLAX open shelf unit from IKEA to house my indoor plants. However, I am concerned about the moisture generated from watering and evaporation from the plants. Specifically, I wonder if this increased humidity in the compartments could cause the shelving material (particleboard with melamine coating) to swell or deteriorate more quickly. If so, what measures would you recommend to minimize the risk of moisture damage without completely reducing the humidity that the plants need? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Thank you all for the many detailed and helpful replies! To summarize, I’ve noted the following:
- Sealing cut edges is important (edge sealant; wood glue is only somewhat effective)
- Waterproof membranes in the compartments are a must
- Avoid leaving standing water in drip trays
- Ensure air circulation, for example by leaving compartments open
- Ventilate regularly to prevent mold growth

I will probably follow these tips and report back if necessary on how things develop. 🙂

In summary, I take away this: sealing the cut edges is important (edge lacquer)
Exactly, ERTAN49. One small addition: when applying the edge lacquer or epoxy resin, make sure it penetrates well into the cut edges, for example by lightly sanding them beforehand. This maximizes protection.

Could you share which plants you allocate the most space to? I always enjoy taking care of the specific needs of different plant species.

The largest plant is a Ficus benjamina, which requires the most water. Aside from that, I have some smaller succulents and cacti.

For the Ficus, I plan to use a small, specialized plastic tray to catch excess water, since it needs to be watered more often. The succulents will be placed on breathable mats to prevent waterlogging.

Thanks for the tip about sanding, I will definitely do that!

A brief update from my side: Today, I started sealing the cut edges using a waterproof varnish product. Additionally, plastic sheets are now laid on the floors of the compartments. The plants are placed on small coasters, and I am leaving some of the compartments partially open. So far, I have not observed any signs of swelling or moisture damage.

Many thanks again to everyone for the tips; the discussion was very helpful! 🙂
