Hello everyone,

I recently replaced the door hinges on my IKEA Kallax shelf because they became a bit loose and wobbly over time. Despite reinstalling the original hinges and replacement parts, the problem has occurred again: the doors become loose after a short while, making closing awkward and impractical.

Has anyone else experienced this or knows of a better, perhaps more stable alternative to the original hinges? What bothers me most is that the screws seem to loosen, or the attachment in the wood eventually gives way. Are there other brands, better materials, or mechanical solutions that hold up permanently?

I appreciate any tips or advice on how to solve this problem for the long term!

This often happens when screws are driven only into the thin plywood. I recommend using longer and stronger dowels with the screws or drilling through the back panel and using nuts on the inside. This significantly increases stability.

Unfortunately, this is a common issue with Kallax units because the screw holes in the thin panels tend to strip quickly. If you like, I can share a few tips on how to largely prevent this:

1. Apply wood filler or repair putty into the stripped holes, let it dry, and then drill new pilot holes.
2. Alternatively, fill the holes with small wooden dowels and then drill new pilot holes.
3. Use sturdier hinges from third-party manufacturers that offer larger mounting surfaces.
4. If you’re handy: secure the hinges with metal plates on the back or reinforce them with small brackets.

It’s worth spending some time on preparation. This way, you can avoid wobbling in the long run. If you want, I can also recommend the best hinges I use myself.

That sounds very practical! However, I also find it frustrating when something designed for home use doesn’t hold up, despite careful effort. With a similar Kallax issue, I never quite knew whether the problem was the screws, the wood, or the assembly.

Maybe a solution with adjustable hinges could work well? Or altering the design to relieve pressure on the door, for example by using better hinges with damping.

How do you personally handle these kinds of problems? I find it reassuring to share experiences, as there are often many ways to reach the goal – after all, the shelving unit should be secure and stable 🙂
