SUANKLAHello everyone, I recently bought a Kallax shelf from Ikea and I’m wondering how to best prevent it from getting dents and scratches from bumps with the vacuum cleaner or other household appliances. The edges and the surface seem to be quite vulnerable. Does anyone have tips or tricks on how to effectively avoid this minor damage? For example, through padding, special handling techniques, or other protective measures? I use the vacuum cleaner quite often and am already concerned that I can only protect the shelf by being constantly careful, which is quite inconvenient in the long run. Thank you in advance for your helpful experiences and advice!
Hello SUANKLA, I have a few tips for you.
First: The edges of the Kallax are often only melamine-coated and not very impact-resistant. To protect them, felt tape or rubber edge protectors that can be easily stuck on are suitable. This significantly reduces scratches.
Another point is the cleaning technique: When vacuuming around the shelf, I recommend using the nozzle carefully and with low suction power. A strong impact from the nozzle causes chipping more quickly.
Additionally, you can cushion the frequent contact points with magnetic or hook-and-loop tape padding. This is especially helpful in areas where you often use the vacuum cleaner.
One more tip: Check the vacuum nozzle itself for sharp edges or bumps, which can also cause damage.
In summary:
1. Attach felt strips or rubber pads to the corners
2. Use a gentle vacuum nozzle
3. Regularly inspect the nozzle side
4. Mount cushioning on the contact points
This way, you can effectively avoid many dents and scratches.

A simple solution is to attach soft foam or felt bumpers to the corners of the Kallax. That's true, and I would even take it a step further: A few self-adhesive felt pads on the spots that often touch the floor work great. This way, the vacuum cleaner can glide over them without scratching the surface.
Also, if your vacuum has a long hose, try to avoid letting the end hit the shelf directly—leave a little clearance. Especially if you vacuum frequently, this makes a big difference.
And don’t worry, a bit of care like this is exactly what furniture like the Kallax really appreciates! 😉
