We have submitted an application for a 1.5-liter house as part of the 10,000 Houses Program initiated by the Free State of Bavaria. To achieve this, we need a very high insulation value in the basement. This wouldn’t be a problem if we could simply add an unlimited amount of external insulation.

However, to ensure our house (timber frame construction) is properly supported on the basement, a maximum of 12 cm (5 inches) of insulation is possible. If we were to use 14 cm (6 inches), the basement wall would protrude.

My idea was to add 2 cm (1 inch) more insulation on the upper floors as well. But the builder says that 8 cm (3 inches) of wood fiber insulation is too heavy for the fasteners. His suggestion is to apply internal insulation in the basement. I’m not very enthusiastic about that.

Does anyone have an idea of other options? For example, basement insulation of 12 cm (5 inches) with a better insulation value?

A better insulation value would be one option... but who is calculating or supervising the construction? It all sounds a bit vague—without a clear plan, just a little here and a bit more there, and somehow it all fits together!?

I still don’t understand why the ground floor should rest on the basement insulation – the perimeter insulation doesn’t have any structural function, so it could be built to any thickness.

At least in solid construction, that’s how it is – or am I misunderstanding something?

The wooden house is to be built on top of the basement. If the basement has 12 cm (5 inches) of external insulation, but the wooden house only has 6 cm (2.5 inches), the studs will need to extend slightly so that the basement and house façades are flush.
Unfortunately, I have only heard that this is not possible or that it is insufficient. However, I have not heard of any solution other than internal insulation.
Is there any basement external insulation with a value below 0.35 WLG?

Wait, does your basement stick out above the ground? If so, I would understand that 🙂

On one side, it is completely above ground.
