Hello,

My father-in-law wants to install a small wood-burning stove in addition to gas heating. The house is about 20 years old.

The stove installer came and said the stove must not be placed next to the wall that separates his semi-detached house from the neighbor’s semi-detached house.

He didn’t give a reason. Is this really an issue?

He lives in Saxony. Who else could he ask— the chimney sweep or some kind of official authority?

In any case, consult the chimney sweep beforehand. They have to inspect the stove and will also advise you on what is possible and what is not.

They are also called demigods in black 😉

While ours is very relaxed and takes everything quite casually.

The wall of the semi-detached house certainly serves as a fire barrier and is therefore subject to specific requirements.
If the wall is too thin, it probably wouldn’t be suitable for placing a stove against it.

Is there actually a chimney? Or was it omitted during the construction back then?

It is not allowed to place it next to the wall that separates his duplex from his neighbor’s duplex.

This can be interpreted quite broadly... How is this wall positioned relative to the neighbor, or which wall exactly is separating them? Between two duplex units, there is no additional separating wall, since each duplex has its own wall adjoining the neighbor... It is different with the terrace wall that might be in front of the house… is that what is meant? Are the houses staggered relative to each other?

Fire safety regulations must be followed.
However, in principle, I would first consult the building savings contract before contacting a stove installer.
