Good morning everyone,

We are about to purchase a prefabricated house from 1963 by Hanse in a few weeks. Currently, the property is heated with an oil boiler from 1985. However, the seller bought a brand-new gas heating system from Weishaupt last year, complete with accessories, which she would of course leave in the house. Additionally, she has already had a gas line installed from the street.

We are now facing the decision of whether to install and possibly upgrade the new gas heating system or switch entirely to alternative heating systems, such as an air source heat pump.

We would appreciate gathering some advice and experiences from this forum. What factors should we consider when making our decision? What are your experiences with gas heating compared to alternative heating systems? Are there any recommendations or considerations we should keep in mind?

We look forward to your opinions and experiences and to an engaging discussion.

Thank you very much and best regards!

What is still needed to start operating the gas heating system?
And what is the current oil consumption?
What areas are still being insulated, and what types of radiators are installed?

We just need to install new piping and have the heating system installed by a professional company. Unfortunately, we don’t know the consumption rate yet. We will also add insulation to the facade, and standard panel radiators are installed.

Due to the delivery times for heat pumps and since the heating system is already available, I would have it installed first. In a few years, you will most likely receive a subsidy for replacing it 😉

Another point in favor of the gas heating right now is that you will probably still need to renovate quite a bit. It’s best to size the heat pump for the fully renovated house. Alternatively, you could negotiate a discount with the seller and have them sell the gas heating system themselves.

An important factor not to be underestimated is the fact that societal progress towards eco-friendly technologies in renovations seems to be very slow. Doing your part to promote this gives a good feeling. (I can say that from personal experience ;-)

For replacing an oil heating system with a heat pump, you could receive up to 45% funding from the Bafa, including, for example, the installation of underfloor heating. I would carefully calculate the costs and also get a quote. The oil heating can continue to run until the conversion. Perhaps you could sell the gas heating system, as there are plenty of enthusiasts eager to buy them because of the new regulations.

Our heating engineer recently said that there are many orders again. But not for heat pumps—instead, people are rushing to install new gas heating systems.
