ᐅ Interior staircase – double-stringer staircase or open-stringer staircase

Hello dear forum, I need some help. I have already used the search function but couldn’t find any (up-to-date) answers 🙂

It’s about choosing our interior platform staircase. The standard option includes a two-stringer staircase. Now, we could also switch to a wooden stringer staircase (without risers), which we also like.

Does anyone have experience with the differences? Or is it just a matter of personal preference? I remember my grandmother’s wooden staircase that always creaked at a certain spot 🙂 We find the wooden stringer staircase somehow feels "warmer" in terms of the living atmosphere. We would like it in white and wood.

Regarding the price difference, we don’t have a quote yet, but we assume the standard two-stringer staircase would be more affordable.
I would appreciate any experiences — either with the type of staircase, personal decisions, or price (surcharge). Thank you.

A small addition: In our case, it’s not a landing staircase but a double quarter-turn staircase.

The staircase “disappears from view.” A staircase is a staircase is a staircase. 😀 I would choose whatever fits best within your budget. Custom requests for staircases can quickly become expensive.
Modern houses often don’t have enough space to really showcase the staircase. In the past, in castle entrance halls and large mansions, this was more important. Today, staircases may look stylish in photos, but in everyday life, they are mostly just staircases.
An open-string wooden staircase is harder to nicely enclose underneath (in case you ever need the space).

Thank you for the many replies.

I think we will stick with the standard and just change the colors of the steps and the railing.

No need for a substructure, as we are building with a basement. Best regards

With a basement but no stepped foundations? – I see.

Why? I don’t like open risers, and there is a window behind them that should remain unobstructed.

We would have made the same decision for a wooden stringer staircase.

A lot of dust accumulates under the staircase without risers.

I accept that for the brightness :-) But I’m familiar with that from “home” as well.
