I have several Malm dressers from IKEA with drawers that have unfortunately been squeaking quite loudly and unpleasantly when I open or close them for some time now. The noise is very noticeable and makes using the furniture rather annoying. I have noticed that the squeaking seems to come from the metal rails or drawer slides, but I’m not sure if that is actually the main issue.

My question is therefore: What steps or repair methods could permanently eliminate this loud squeaking? Are there specific lubricants suitable for this, or rather mechanical adjustments that could solve the problem? I don’t want to cause any damage, so it would be great if someone has experience or recommendations that are easy for beginners to carry out. Thanks in advance!

The issue with squeaky MALM drawers is often caused by insufficient lubrication of the sliding rails or accumulated dirt. First, I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the rails—you can remove the drawers and clean the dirt from the glides using a dry cloth or brush.

Afterward, a dry lubricant is best, such as silicone spray. This provides long-lasting lubrication, does not attract dust, and protects the metal parts from rust. It is important not to use oil or grease, as these substances can attract dirt, which may worsen the squeaking.

If that is not enough, it is advisable to check the rails for damage or deformation. Sometimes small bends or warped metal parts are the reason for the noise.

Great topic! I had the same issue with my MALM drawers, and after lubricating them with silicone spray, the problem was solved! 🙂 It also helped me to align the drawers properly and make sure they weren’t too tight or too loose.

Just try it out and keep at it – the more often you do it, the better! You don’t have squeaky drawers every day, but when they get annoying, it’s definitely worth the effort!!! :-)

The tip about silicone spray is correct and aligns with IKEA’s recommendations for the MALM drawers.

It is important that the drawer slides are not damaged or bent, as mechanical deformations can also cause squeaking.

Additionally, checking the plastic glides can help; if they are worn or damaged, replacing them is advisable. Replacement parts are usually available from IKEA. If in doubt, you can fully remove the drawers to inspect the slides for possible debris or corrosion.

That’s a crucial point! It’s frustrating when you apply grease and then even more dirt sticks to the rails. My recommendation is to thoroughly clean first, and then use only silicone spray.

Also, you should check if the drawers are properly mounted. Sometimes squeaking occurs if the drawers are not perfectly aligned or if the slides are loose. Also, check if the screws on the slides are tightened securely.

Hey 🙂 I had this problem last year. My trick was to sprinkle a little dry talcum powder along the sliding tracks; that quickly stopped the squeaking for me. No grease, no oil—just plain talcum powder from the pharmacy!

Give it a try, it’s inexpensive and definitely makes things more comfortable! 😉
