Hello everyone, I recently got a Billy shelf from Ikea for my home, and unfortunately, some scratches appeared on the shelves during transport. Since the shelves are very affordable and made of particleboard with a thin laminate surface, I’m unsure how to best handle these scratches to minimize or repair their appearance. Does anyone have experience with scratches on Billy shelves and can offer helpful tips on how to effectively and easily fix them? I would like to know which products or methods have proven useful – from special repair kits to DIY tricks. Thanks in advance!
Thank you very much for the tips so far! The advice about laminate and furniture filler, as well as furniture touch-up markers, is especially helpful. I will check how deep the scratches really are – I believe most of the damage is just light surface scratches on the laminate.
One thing I’m still curious about: How often do these wax or marker corrections need to be redone? Do they last fairly well, or do the different color patches become visible after a few weeks or months? I would appreciate any shared experiences.

How often do you need to redo those wax or stick repairs? Do they last reasonably well? I would say that with normal use, they last for several months. Of course, if you move the shelf a lot or wipe it with a damp cloth, the repair will fade faster. In low-traffic areas, you can easily expect a few months. Then just touch it up—it’s not expensive anyway. 🙂
Additionally, if you are unsure, it’s better to start with small tests. This way, you can see how well the product holds and how the color looks. And yes, after a few months a touch-up is often needed, which is not a problem since these small repairs often add charming "signs of life" to the piece of furniture. Good luck with the repair!
