Hello everyone,
I own an IKEA PAX wardrobe and would like to attach handles to the wardrobe doors. However, I have noticed that IKEA PAX units often do not have pre-drilled holes for the handles, or that the supplied handles are attached differently compared to typical kitchen cabinets. My question is: How can you properly and securely fix IKEA handles to PAX wardrobe doors without damaging the doors or having the handles come loose later?
I am especially interested in whether there are specific drilling patterns or distances to observe, and if the use of special screws or tools is recommended. I would also like to know if there are differences in the handles that can be used on PAX doors, for example, whether some handles are only compatible with certain door types.
I look forward to your experiences and tips, thanks in advance!

I completely understand how tricky that can be. I had the same concerns when assembling my PAX wardrobe. It’s important to measure exactly where the holes need to go first, since PAX doors are often smooth and don’t come pre-drilled.
What helped me was to make pilot holes with a small drill bit to avoid splitting the material. I followed the measurements provided by IKEA for handles on PAX doors.

Many handles are mounted with a screw spacing of 128 mm or 192 mm (5 inches or 7.5 inches) – these are common sizes. You should check beforehand whether your handle fits one of these measurements or if you’re using a different model.
I recommend marking the hole positions on the door with a pencil and then drilling carefully, ideally with a drill bit sized to match the screw diameter. Then attach the handles using the appropriate screws.
Sure, it can make you a bit nervous, but with patience, it will definitely work out!

It’s also important to consider the door material. PAX doors are often made of MDF or coated wood panels, so it’s definitely recommended to pre-drill slowly with a thin drill bit to avoid splitting. Also, always use the appropriate screws – preferably the ones supplied, as they are matched exactly to the door thickness.
If you don’t have pre-drilled holes, you can use a small square to mark the position accurately. This helps prevent the handles from being crooked. I always hold the handle in place first, then pre-drill with a thin drill bit, and only then drill the final holes.
Good luck, it will definitely turn out great! And if you have any more questions, just ask!
Hello Luckin,
here are a few tips from me to ensure nothing goes wrong when installing the IKEA handles on PAX cabinet doors:
- First, check which type of PAX door you have (smooth cabinet door, mirrored door, or glass door). Mounting options often vary depending on the type.
- Be sure to use a stop or a template to position the drill holes precisely. IKEA sometimes provides mounting aids for handles; if not, you can make your own template from cardboard or wood.
- The screws that come with the handles are usually self-tapping, which makes screwing easier.
- Make sure to use the correct screw length – screws that are too long can interfere with the inside of the door, while screws that are too short provide poor hold.
- If you are unsure, start drilling with a small diameter and gradually enlarge it, instead of drilling with the large bit right away.
- Work slowly and carefully to avoid splintering or tear-out.
Yes, there are! Some handles are specifically designed for PAX and come with screws in the matching size. Other kitchen or furniture handles may have different hole spacing or screw lengths.
I wish you good luck with your project and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!
