Hello everyone,

I plan to modify my Ikea Besta shelving unit to optimize it as a TV stand with a soundbar. Specifically, I want to ensure that the soundbar is either discreetly integrated or placed on the furniture without compromising the sound quality, while also providing sufficient ventilation for the electronics.

I’m interested in what modifications or adjustments you would recommend to:

- securely mount or install the soundbar
- allow enough space for ventilation at the back and sides
- enable tidy cable management
- possibly maintain or increase storage space efficiently

Has anyone had experience with cutting or reinforcing the shelves, or installing ventilation grilles? Are there particular models that work especially well together? I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

The sides can remain closed.

I would disagree here; depending on the soundbar model, side damping can affect the sound characteristics. Some devices reflect side sound or have side speaker outputs.

Additionally, the load-bearing capacity of the shelf should be critically evaluated if shelves are removed or replaced. What does your current storage look like? Is a lot of weight stored there?

I would recommend measuring the entire setup in advance and checking the acoustic properties of your soundbar. It might be more practical to use a separate soundbar shelf solution to increase flexibility.

Absolutely! But hey, especially with IKEA furniture, it’s fun to get creative and create your own personal style! You can always insert a shelf or drill additional holes; it’s not a masterpiece.

What I did: I replaced the back panel with perforated metal sheet, which allows fresh air to circulate and looks stylish! Give it a try, it’s not difficult at all! If it doesn’t fit, just swap in another panel – easy!

The soundbar now fits perfectly and is very well ventilated. Great fun, thanks for the thread, gerdbo!

Summary and Recommendations:

- Precise adjustment of the middle shelves or installation of a base for the soundbar
- Ventilation through modifications to the back panel (holes, grilles) is effective; side vents are usually unnecessary
- Cable management through openings at the rear
- Stability checks after modification are essential, reinforcement if necessary
- Sound quality should not be affected by angled front panels or a freestanding soundbar

If needed, basic acoustic principles should be considered to achieve optimal sound quality. The stability and safety of the construction must take priority.

I recommend carefully planning all changes and, if necessary, conducting small tests before final installation.
