Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of attaching Ikea Pax handles to the doors of my new wardrobe and have a specific question: How exactly do I securely and accurately mount the handles on the PAX doors without them wobbling or causing damage?

I have already measured the doors and the holes for the handles are already there, but I am unsure whether I can simply screw the supplied screws through the door or if there are special instructions for installation, such as torque, screw type, or fitting the covers that conceal the screws.

Does anyone have experience with the best tools and procedure to attach the handles to the thin doors? I would also be interested to know if there are differences in the installation depending on the door material (glass fronts, mirrored doors, or standard MDF).

Thank you very much in advance for your helpful support!

When installing the Ikea PAX handles on the doors, the following points should be considered:

- The handles are usually attached from the inside of the door using the screws included in the delivery. The designated holes are often pre-drilled and precisely aligned to ensure a straight appearance.
- It is important not to tighten the screws too much, as the door panels are often made of thin MDF and can crack or deform under excessive screw pressure. A moderate, even tightening is recommended.
- For glass or mirrored doors, Ikea recommends special mounting kits, in addition to the handles, which usually include spacers or plastic backings to protect the glass from damage. Without these, there is a risk of stress cracks.
- Installation should preferably be done with a Phillips or Allen screwdriver, as most screws have corresponding heads. Power tools should only be used at very low speed and with care to avoid stripping the screws.

Additionally, it is helpful to lay out all parts (handle, screws, cover caps) beforehand and carefully check the positioning. This helps to avoid unnecessary holes or incorrect installations.

If further details on the different door types are needed, I can provide more information.

I can completely understand how frustrating it can be when trying to attach IKEA PAX handles to the doors and feeling unsure if you’re doing it correctly. I had a similar experience, especially because the doors are quite thin.

That’s true, but with my first attempts, I simply tightened the screws too much – which caused the MDF door to slightly deform at that spot.

From my experience, it really helps to work slowly and carefully, and not to fully tighten the screws. I also placed a small rubber washer between the door and the handle so that the handle doesn’t rub directly on the surface, which improves the look and makes the handle a bit more secure.

This is very important. I once tried to install regular handles on mirror doors, and that turned out badly because there was a risk of damaging the mirror. So definitely use only the manufacturer’s recommended kits!

I hope this helps a bit. If you have any more questions about the exact positioning of the holes or how to avoid minor damage to the surfaces, feel free to ask.

A note from my side that might be somewhat controversial, but I find important in the context of the topic "How do I attach Ikea PAX handles to doors?":

In general, it is correct to insert the screws from the back through the door, but one should also consider whether the standard fastening hardware is suitable for all door types. In some cases, especially when retrofitting different handles to PAX doors, the length or strength of the Ikea screws is not sufficient. This can be particularly problematic with wider or heavier handles.

My tip, which I frequently use myself: check the screw length and, if necessary, replace them with longer, sturdier screws available at hardware stores. Also, I wonder if there are cases where an additional wall plug or reinforcement is needed to prevent the handles from loosening over time.

I think it would be helpful if someone with many years of experience could comment on how often such screw replacements are really necessary and whether the PAX wardrobe is truly prepared from the factory for all door materials. It’s not just about using the right tools and careful tightening but also about the long-term durability of the handles – a topic that is rarely discussed.
