Hello.
We have received, according to our architect, a rather expensive offer from a structural engineer he frequently commissions. The architect also thinks that, due to high demand in this trade, I probably wouldn’t find a significantly better offer nearby.
Now, I would like to gather a few more quotes myself, and they don’t necessarily have to be from the immediate area. Of course, I wonder how to tell if a structural engineer is good or if they might put in little effort. Otherwise, I would only be able to decide based on price, which isn’t always the best choice in the end...
Are there any indicators to look out for?
Thanks in advance.

Wow, how do you know that the offer is not affordable or does not meet the requirements?
We also rely here on the team consisting of the architect, structural engineer, (reviewing engineer), and KfW expert.
There is so much to coordinate, clarify, and handle quickly. I imagine it would be difficult to bring in someone external. Of course, it’s possible, but first, you have to find the right person and have the time.

Hello,
just a simple question: How much does a structural engineer usually cost? I would expect something in the range of 1-2% of the construction cost. Is that about right?
Regarding your question: It’s probably really difficult to bring in a different structural engineer at this stage. If they have already worked several times with your architect, many questions are already clarified, and they might waive some conservative allowances for ceiling or wall thicknesses because they can clarify things more precisely.
It doesn’t make sense to save $1000 with the structural engineer only to pay $2000 more for a thicker ceiling.
While the calculation methods are standardized and regulated, there can always be some discretion in borderline cases.
Best regards,
Andreas

We have received a not exactly cheap offer from the structural engineer frequently commissioned by the architect, according to the architect. In this situation, I would also consider rethinking the architect.

In this situation, I would also consider involving an architect. Because then the architect would similarly be too expensive?
