Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of assembling several IKEA Malm drawers more easily and efficiently. The drawers themselves are very practical, but during assembly, it quickly becomes clear that it can sometimes be quite fiddly, especially when you want to put together a few drawers at once, like I do.

I am particularly interested in whether anyone here has tips and tricks to simplify assembling the Malm drawers. Are there tools or small aids that help with aligning the rails and fitting the drawer fronts?

Any advice on whether certain steps can be skipped or if there are better sequences for assembly would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Use a second person to hold the front in place while you attach the drawer to the slide rails. A cordless screwdriver also helps to screw it in quickly. This saves time and effort.

Hello Mionteo,

I have assembled many Malm drawers myself and can share some tips from experience that might make your work process significantly easier.

First of all, it helps to sort all the individual parts and screws beforehand to avoid stress searching for them later. This may sound obvious, but it is often underestimated.

When installing the drawer slides, make sure to screw them in loosely at first, meaning don’t tighten the screws completely. This allows you to adjust the slides slightly and align them more precisely on the drawer before fully securing them.

Another tip is to prepare the drawer front separately: attach the clips and the back panel before assembling the drawer box. This makes handling the individual parts easier.

For tools, I recommend a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque. Over-tightening the screws can cause the plastic clip holders to break.

Finally, if you plan to assemble multiple drawers, take your time with the first fully assembled drawer. Usually, you quickly realize which small steps can be optimized for the next ones.

Could you also let me know whether your Malm drawers have the push-to-open mechanism version or the classic handles? That might influence further tips.

Loosely pre-screw the rails first

I can confirm that. Additionally, use a small square as a guide; it makes aligning the rails easier.

Good question! I have the classic handles, no push-to-open modules. Hopefully, that makes things a bit simpler.

Do you mean something like a small metal or plastic square? It would be interesting to know exactly how that works for alignment. I sometimes have trouble mounting the rails parallel and straight.

One more general question: Is there a recommended sequence of steps that has proven effective? For example, starting with the carcass or better to begin with the drawer fronts and then the interior assembly?

Hello Mionteo,

I’d like to respond to your question in detail, as I have had various experiences assembling Malm drawers myself.

Regarding the order of assembly: It is indeed very practical to first build the carcass and loosely install the drawer slides without fully tightening the screws – as you already mentioned. After that, you can attach the drawer boxes to the fronts and fine-tune the slides.

When it comes to aligning the drawer slides, if you don’t have special tools, I recommend using a small, straight piece of wood or a square as a guide. Place it against the side of the slide and adjust it so that it sits exactly parallel to the edge of the carcass. This helps prevent the drawer from sticking later on.

Another tip: Save mounting the drawer fronts for last. Once the other parts are assembled, you can position the fronts accurately and securely attach them with the supplied fasteners.

I used to make the mistake of assembling all components immediately, which led to misalignment and frustration. Patience and step-by-step work are crucial here.

If you want, I can also provide you with a checklist of the individual steps to make the process easier.

I hope my suggestions help you! 🙂
