Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes sideboard and would like to add casters to make it easier to move around the room. The furniture isn’t heavy, but the fixed base design makes it quite immobile. My question is: What types of casters work best for the Brimnes piece, how can they be securely attached without compromising the cabinet’s stability, and are there any special considerations to keep in mind during installation? I’m especially interested in tips on how to install the casters as discreetly as possible, and whether standard furniture casters are suitable or if more specialized options are recommended. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

Hello, I can only emphasize the idea of reinforcement; the wood used in the Brimnes is really not very solid. I equipped a similar shelf with casters myself, and it helped to attach a thin plywood panel on the inside, which serves as a base for the screws. This way, the pressure is distributed more evenly. It is also important not to choose casters that are too small, so the weight is well supported and the floor coverings are protected.

Regarding brakes: I chose all casters with brakes because otherwise the piece of furniture easily rolls away when cleaning or if accidentally bumped. But of course, that is a matter of personal preference.

I did the same for my setup – casters with wide wheels and brakes. The important thing is not to miscalculate and to buy casters that can support the weight of the fully loaded cabinet. Otherwise, the fun ends quickly.

My tip: go for slightly more expensive casters that glide smoothly and are quiet. That makes a difference if you move it around often. And don’t forget to pre-drill before installation – otherwise, nothing will hold. 😉

Another option I know of is to use casters with threaded adapters that screw into the existing threaded feet of the Brimnes. This way, the original connection remains intact, and the furniture can easily be extended with casters. This can improve stability, and installation is possible even without reinforcement.

I can only agree with eldubi; the threaded adapter is an elegant solution. Simply unscrew the original feet and replace them with castors that have matching threads. This way, the attachment is secure and reversible. Ideal if you want to avoid drilling.
