ᐅ How can I tell when my BILLY shelf unit needs to be replaced?

Hello everyone,

I have an older Billy bookshelf from IKEA that I have been using for several years. Now I’m wondering how to reliably determine whether the shelf really needs to be replaced or if it can still be repaired. Are there specific signs such as material fatigue, visible damage, or stability issues that indicate the shelf should no longer be used? I would appreciate a concrete list of indicators or tips. Thanks in advance!

The back panel is slightly torn in some places, which makes me uncertain.

The back panel on BILLY units is usually made of thin hardboard or cardboard. Small tears do not immediately affect stability, but if the back panel is heavily damaged or partially missing in critical areas, this is a serious warning sign. The back panel contributes significantly to lateral stability.

If your shelving unit is already older and the back panel is damaged, you should either replace the back panel (which is sometimes available as a spare part) or consider purchasing a new unit, especially if the existing one also shows other signs of wear.

Hi everyone,

I think this discussion is really helpful! 🙂 To wrap up, here’s my personal tip: Sometimes it’s worth securing the shelf to the wall with a few metal brackets. This adds stability and might extend the shelf’s lifespan a bit longer if there is no further damage.

Of course, this doesn’t replace anything that is broken, but sometimes you can get a little more use out of your trusty BILLY this way 😉
